Stephen Scullion Brings Community Fitness to Failsworth
We spoke with our Transport Planner, Stephen Scullion, about how his morning exercise routine in the park grew into a non-profit gym for the community
What started out as a 6am training and exercise routine between Stephen and his friend soon grew into an incredible scheme. Whilst they were running and using the local park facilities for exercise, they began to attract interest from local friends and family.
As it started to get darker in the mornings and the routine became more popular, they decided to rent out a local gym in the mornings. Aptly named the 6am club, they designed sessions to suit everyone and anyone.
Now, Stephen and his friend rent their own unit and have created their non-profit gym, Community Fitness, which says exactly what the gym is for – providing fitness to their local community. The best part is that it is completely free, making it easily accessible for the community – they just kindly ask for a small donation to help cover the cost of the rent.
Currently they continue providing their 6am and 7pm weekly sessions, and are keen to grow the gym even more by offering additional sessions and opportunities.
We think it is incredible what Stephen, his friend, and the community have achieved in a short period of time, and that he has turned his passion for exercise and fitness into something that benefits his local community.
